rör.el.ser, presented with re|thread, staged a dialogue between two artworks: an electromagnetic field and dancing magnets, colorful generative art prints, 500 metres of electric wire in 90 loops, 14 images created from 544 lines of code. It opened with a vernissage on 20 March, 16:00 to 21:00, and during the exhibition the gallery hosted a live concert with Erik Natanael Gustafsson.
Being a Dove by Maria Euler runs 500 metres of copper cable in 90 loops at 12 volts, 1 to 3 amps and 1 to 10 hertz. Some animals, such as the dove, can see electromagnetic fields and orient themselves by them; humans, though surrounded by magnetic fields both natural and artificial, cannot perceive them directly. The coil sculpture draws you close, makes you aware of the field it generates, and invites you to explore external senses and feel the moving field.
Hommage à Molnár by Roni Kaufman answers from the other side of the room: lines, curves, corners and angles, waves and zigzags, repetitions, gradients and plain colors. The generative project joins the spirit of the algorithmic art pioneer Vera Molnár with modern graphic design aesthetics. Each output comes from the same JavaScript code, written by the artist; randomized parameters, such as the color palette, mean a different image every run.
